Our Year 1 King’s Ely Acremont Pre-Prep pupils had a terrific time learning about ‘Farming in the Fens’ at The Farmland Museum and Denny Abbey!
The children and our Year 1 Teaching Team had the museum, which is based near Waterbeach, all to themselves as they toured its facilities and attractions, and enjoyed fascinating workshops.
Our Year 1 Teachers, Mr Andrew Hart and Mrs Helen Monk, said: “We split into small groups to rotate around four different workshops during the day – it was certainly an action-packed visit! In the ‘Seed to Shelf’ workshop, we learnt about the process of making bread before tractors existed to help farmers. We were amazed at how large and heavy their tools were, and how long the process would have taken! We learnt how children, not much older than us, would have spent the day in the fields scaring away birds. In the craft room, we created scarecrows from recycled materials, including old CDs and newspapers.
“After our packed lunch and some playtime in the sunshine, we continued to explore the Farmland Museum. We enjoyed investigating the old ploughs and the tractors, before then visiting the old dairy. A particular highlight was milking Daisy the Cow! Finally, we explored Denny Abbey itself and completed a time detectives challenge to help us discover more about the history of the building. Year 1 impressed all of the volunteers and staff with their enthusiasm, knowledge, and excellent behaviour. What a super day we all had. Well done children!”
