Your full name:

Hugh Chippington

In which year group did you join King’s?

I joined King’s Ely Senior in Year 9.

What A-Level subjects are you studying?

Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, and an EPQ.

What is your favourite subject and why?

Chemistry – it surprised me the most. It was a bit of a rogue pick as I initially had my heart set on Geography, but I took the risk with Chemistry, and I love the complexity and challenge it offers.

What extra-curricular activities are you involved in at King’s?

Quite a lot. I am a particularly musical person; I take part in all the big school bands, playing trombone alongside numerous Choirs. Most notably, I will be Head of The King’s Barbers next year. This is the school’s all-male a Capella group for previous Boy Choristers, and I am greatly looking forward to leading a fantastic group of boys in probably the most fun musical groups the school has. I also sing in the Cathedral as a Choral Scholar, which has taught me important lessons about timekeeping and managing my time!

Describe King’s in three words:

‘Passionate’, ‘Lively’, ‘Welcoming’.

How do you feel to have been appointed Deputy Head of School?

Honoured! The trust my teachers and peers have put in me to be a useful companion to the two Heads of School is humbling. I am very excited to see what the year ahead holds for us all!

What do you hope to achieve in your capacity as Deputy Head of School?

To take some of the stress off the shoulders of the Heads, primarily. But more personally, I would like to help nourish the community of the school and help with communication between all aspects of King’s. I think that is how meaningful change is made within the community; talking to each other about what is important to us!

What are your plans for after Sixth Form? Do you know what career you would like to pursue yet?

I plan on studying Mechanical Engineering at University, with the goal of one day running an engineering company. Whilst of course continuing to enjoy my music and singing!

Hobbies/interests outside of school:

I play quite a lot of golf and I am currently trying (slowly) to teach myself how to play the guitar. I also love watching Formula 1 – the engineering aspect behind the scenes fascinates me. Lastly, when I have time, I thoroughly enjoy sailing.

Any pets?

Yes, a brown Cocker Spaniel called Kip. We both share the same contagious energy.

What is your favourite meal/food at King’s?

What a question! I would probably have to say the pulled pork wraps. You will often find me waiting around the lunch hall for seconds when they are for lunch!

If you could have a superpower, what would it be?

Teleportation.

Who is your hero?

My parents.

What is your proudest accomplishment?

Probably being appointed Head Barber for next year. The previous Head Barbers have all been role models for me, and I am hopeful that I can follow in their footsteps and inspire others too!

What was the last book you read?

‘Why does E=mc2?’ by Dr Brian Cox and Professor Jeff Forshaw.

What song are you most likely to sing at a karaoke?

Probably ‘Last Friday Night’ by Katy Perry (Embarrassing, I know!).

What is your favourite film?

‘Apollo 13’.

Do you have any phobias or fears?

Being charged down by a cow.

If you could share a meal with any four individuals, living or dead, who would they be?

Steve Jobs, Neil Armstrong, Albert Einstein, Stephen Hawking.

Name three things you would want with you if stranded on a desert island for a week:

Sun cream (I burn very easily), a set of golf clubs, and a pair of swimming trunks.
