Miss Michelle Bird, our Head of Athletics, said: “Our athletes gave a thrilling display of talent and determination. Congratulations not just to those students who achieved medals, but to every single pupil who took part. For some of our athletes, this was their first time putting their training to the test in a competitive setting, and we are proud of their achievements.

“As well as first, second and third places, there were many fourth and fifth places and lots of personal bests. Arthur Curtis-Bloor, Saket Shrestha, Thomas Prideaux-Brune, Dominic Yap, Rosalind Crowe, Hannah Larmour, Alice Fraser, Vincent Jethwa, Moses Chong, Edward Mauremootoo, Kelvin Chan, Amelia Hickey, Ella-Marie Sadler, and Anastasia Liashenko.

“To finish the event, the 4x 100m relay teams brought excitement to the track. The Year 8 girls’ team executed seamless baton exchanges and finished in third place. The Year 10 girls’ team stormed into first place with a stellar second leg by Alesya Giles.

“We now wait to find out if any of our amazing athletes will be chosen to represent Cambridgeshire at the Regional Championships in Norwich on June 15th! Thank you to Mr Allen, Miss Clayton, and Miss Henry for supporting the team and I at the event.”

The King’s Ely Open Athletics Competition for Years 9 and 10 students also kicked off before half term!

The in-house event allows athletes to test their training and score individual points in a league format, featuring different events each round.

The first round featured the 800m, shot put, and long jump events. In the girls’ competition, our middle-distance runners secured the top three positions on the leader board. Conversely, in the boys’ events, two sprinters excelled in the 800m and shot put, outperforming the middle-distance runners to claim the top spots on the leader board:

Alesya Giles – 12 points
Odhran Grant – 10 points
Ianthe Wilding – 8 points

Moses Chong – 13 points
Dongyeon Kim – 11 points
Winston Knight – 8 points

Miss Bird said: “All students are to be commended for their efforts and determination, particularly as they stepped out of their comfort zones to participate in events that were not necessarily their speciality. The upcoming rounds will provide a platform for other athletes to demonstrate their skills in 100m, 200m, high jump, javelin, and discus. We eagerly anticipate the next round, where our athletes will continue to compete and earn points to become the open champions!”
