Senior Boarding

King's Ely SENior

Senior Boarding

Students from around the world are able to live, work and socialise together, sharing all aspects of school and boarding house life.

The cultural diversity that our students from 40 different countries bring to our community is a cause for celebration.

"To move countries, schools and systems, during formative years of personal development, could have been very difficult. King’s has been nothing short of wonderful in their inclusivity, acceptance, nurturing and encouragement to my daughter."
King’s Ely Senior parent

At King’s Ely Senior, we are extremely proud that our boarding houses, some of which date back to the Middle Ages, reflect the world in the 21st century.

The dynamic boarding environment at King’s Ely encourages pupils to live their lives to the full.  This could be competing in an Inter-House sports match, acting in a drama production or singing in a choir in Ely Cathedral.

Boarders appreciate what it means to be part of a highly supportive community and actively encourage each other to achieve their potential.  Living and growing together, students understand how their actions affect others; they learn to be considerate and tolerant of different views as well as resilient to the challenges that life and learning can bring.

Young adults leave King’s Ely Senior confident in their ability to communicate readily and easily with those from different cultures and backgrounds and to take their place in an interconnected, globalised world.

Wendreda house occupies an extension to the magnificent  Bishop’s Palace whose gardens include a massive Plane tree said to have been planted in the 17th century.

At King’s Ely, we are extremely proud that our boarding houses, some of which date back to the Middle Ages, reflect the world in the 21st century. The rich cultural diversity that our students from 40 different countries bring to our community is a cause for celebration.

Etheldreda - Senior Girls Boarding

Etheldreda is a former Cathedral canon’s house. To its rear, the house gives onto Firmary Lane, the site of the original 12th Century abbey infirmary, and provides a ready route to the Cathedral.

The south front overlooks the Dean’s Meadow, an extensive parkland created in the mid 19th century from the garden plots belonging to the Canons’ houses.

School House - Senior Boys Boarding

School House occupies the original accommodation, within the monastic precinct, provided for the School in 1541, when the Cathedral was refounded.

The late 11th century building, probably originally a granary, was converted to guest accommodation for Ely monastery in the 13th century.

The School’s only boarding accommodation until 1882, it faces onto School Lane, opposite the 14th century Prior Crauden’s chapel, now used as the School chapel, and the leafy grounds of Priory House, home to our King's Ely Prep boarders.
