Core Mathematics Course 

Core Maths is a qualification designed for students who have achieved a grade 4 or above at GCSE.

 

Core Maths supports the learning of other A-level subjects and the pre-requisite is basic GCSE skills.

Why study Core Maths?

  • Love Maths but cannot take it as a full A level
  • Explore real world applications of Maths including mortgages, income tax and inflation
  • Develop critical analysis of data
  • Gain a qualification equivalent to an AS level in UCAS tariff points

Besides Science subjects (Chemistry, Biology and Physics) the following courses would benefit from Core Maths. You can opt to attend Core Maths if you are studying:

  • Psychology
  • Geography
  • Business Studies
  • Computer Science
Prerequisite

Level 3 Mathematical Studies is a qualification designed for students who have achieved a grade 4 or above at GCSE.

Topic Overview

We study Core Maths course as a two-year linear course which will be examined at the end of Year 13.  The examination will consist of 2 papers of 1.5 hours each.

You will have 1 lesson per week with a Maths teacher. If you are studying Science and are not studying Maths, then you will have to attend the Core Maths lessons. 

Assessment

2 exams, 1 hour and 30 minutes each

  • Both exams allow a calculator
  • Preliminary material released on 1 March
  • Qualification is graded from A – E

Paper 1 covers topics on Personal Finance, analysis of data and estimation technique

Paper 2 – Statistical techniques or Critical path and risk analysis or graphical techniques.
