 Classics

The study of Classics introduces pupils to a vast and unusual ancient world.

Classics incorporates the culture, language, philosophy, art, history, politics and many other aspects of the ancient Greek and Roman worlds.

In Year 7 and 8, the Classics course combines the study of the Latin language and ancient civilisations. De Romanis, an exciting new textbook developed in Cambridge, forms the basis of our curriculum, supplemented by bespoke cultural material on the ancient Greek and Roman world.

In Year 7, pupils will be introduced to the Classical gods, ancient heroes and the fascinating mythology surrounding them.

In Year 8, they will look at how ancient people interacted with their gods, including popular topics such as temples, gladiators, festivals and prophecy. All students will be encouraged to make links between Classics and their English, History, RS and Modern Language lessons.

Our curriculum is complemented by Classical clubs including Beginners’ Ancient Greek for Year 8, and we encourage students to get involved in local and national competitions run by the Classical Association.
