History
All students at King’s Ely Prep study History as part of their broad and varied scheme of work.
Our courses cover the history of our local community, Britain, Europe and the wider world. Courses are taught in a way that makes the pupils question sources and think about the motives and reasons why people in the past acted and thought as they did. We teach important Historical skills such as Causation and Consequence and place an emphasis on developing literacy skills.
In Years 3 to 5 History themes are integrated into the broader curriculum, and learning is brought to life with multiple school trips across the Prep school. Year 3 study World War II, the Mayans, and the Stone Age, and visit Flag Fen to study the local Stone Age site of national importance. Year 4 visit St Albans to see the Roman remains, and Year 5 have gone on trips to Gressenhall and Ironbridge, as part of their topic on the Victorians. .
From Year 6 onwards, History is taught by subject specialist teachers. Our Year 6 course on Early British History includes a trip to Sutton Hoo to visit the site, and in Year 7, the pupils study Medieval Britain and visit Mountfitchet Castle. In Year 8 we explore the Tudors and Stuarts, and visit Oliver Cromwell’s House.
The department has an array of artefacts and replicas to bring topics to life. We have strong links with the Cathedral, and endeavour to link our local history with our pupils’ curriculum whenever possible. Last year we ran a competition during Black History Month and each year we have a Whole School History Week.
