Art and Design

The department specialises in Fashion and Textiles, Fine Art, Sculpture and Photography.

At King’s Ely Senior, specialist teachers encourage students to realise ambitious outcomes and foster independent, adventurous creativity.

Our courses offer freedom, diversity and independence and an ultimate aim to achieve success. Students can be sure to have a wonderful time working within a well-resourced department that will create every opportunity for them to reach their full potential.

Fine Art

Fine Art is both a form of communication and a means of expression of ideas and feelings. It is a language which complements those of the literary, mathematical, scientific and factually based subjects, and is especially concerned with the development of those complex mental processes involved in visual perception and aesthetic experience.

The syllabus has been devised to combine the necessary breadth and depth of study with the freedom of choice required to accommodate a wide range of abilities and material requirements.

The pupils will cover a combination of methods and genres from the following disciplines: drawing, painting, photography, mixed media, printing and sculpture.

Students will gain an understanding of contexts in art, craft and design and have the chance to participate in a variety of art excursions as well as regular collaborative exhibitions.

Assessment

  • The qualification is comprised of two units of work.
  • The first unit requires the development of a portfolio of work and carries 60% of the final mark.
  • The second unit is the externally set task and is one unit of work worth 40% of the GCSE Art and Design marks.

Photography

If you aspire of being a portrait photographer, a fashion photographer, still life photographer or a documentary photographer, we can guide you and give you direction.

Photography does not discriminate! Everyone can gain access to a phone camera or DSLR camera and is part of our lives recording what you see and later to reminisce.

If you are prepared to put your world under the focus of a lens where you can make the ordinary extraordinary, then Photography will give you the opportunity to view your environment in a unique way.

The skills that you will learn over the course will enhance your creativity and understanding of how photography can contribute to many aspects of life for your next educational journey at King’s Ely.

Assessment

  • Component 1 Portfolio is 60%
  • Component 2 Externally set assignment 40%
  • There will be formative and summative assessments during the course with 1 to 1 review to support individuals

Textile Design

GCSE Textile Design will offer creative, exciting and stimulating opportunities to explore a range of textile media, techniques and processes.

A variety of approaches will be used so that students of all abilities are able to fulfil their potential and no previous experience is necessary to pursue this option.

Diverse Textile processes and unconventional construction contribute to an exciting environment where you will develop a personal style of work.

Excursions to museums and galleries such as the V&A, Fitzwilliam and visits to Alexandra Palace and Business Design Centre  support the investigation into artists, craftspeople and designers.

Assessment

  • It is a two-unit award with the Portfolio of Work contributing 60% of the final mark and the Externally Set Assignment 40%.
  • The Portfolio of Work (coursework) will take place through Year 10 and until January of Year 11 after which the exam paper is launched for the Externally Set Assignment.
  • Assessments take place through one to one discussion, group discussion and written feedback.
