King's Ely linguists shine in Poésíæ competition!

January 31st, 2025

Four King's Ely students are celebrating victory in an international languages competition.

Pupils in Years 3 to 13 were encouraged to enter the 2024 Poésíæ contest by their Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) teachers. To take part, linguists had to choose a poem in French, Spanish, or German and either practise reciting it and then record themselves reading it out loud, or illustrate their interpretation of the poem.

We are thrilled to announce that Year 4 King's Ely Prep pupil, Mike, is a global winner in the French poetry recitation category, and that Year 8 King's Ely Prep student, Laura, is a global winner in the French illustration category. Year 9 King's Ely Senior student, Penny, is a global winner in the German poetry recitation category, as is Year 13 King's Ely Sixth Form student, Erin.

Poésíæ started out as an annual French poetry recitation competition in a little school. During the pandemic, organisers thought that it would be a great idea to expand the competition to a few more schools to spread the love of foreign languages, to help develop oracy skills, and to boost children's self-confidence. Since then, it has grown massively, with more than 200 schools from all over the world now involved.

Congratulations to Mike, Laura, Penny, and Erin, and well done to all of our students who entered!
